Building a car can be a difficult balancing act of pitting your skill levels against your available cash. It can be difficult to decide what to do yourself and what needs to be farmed out. Our project ’62 Olds 88 is nearing completion and the last major task is the interior.

Decades spent baking in the sun in a South Dakota field and serving as a home to countless families of mice had rendered our factory interior worthless. A cracked dash pad, torn seats, warped door panels, and shredded headliner justified a completely new interior for our Olds.

While the Street Thunder staff doesn’t blink an eye at metal replacement or engine builds with hard to find parts, replacing the interior in our ’62 Olds was just a bit out of our comfort zone. Our situation mimics many enthusiasts’ cockpits and so did our hesitation to do it ourselves. None of us on staff are experts with a needle and thread, but all know firsthand how expensive custom upholstery can be. Farming out our interior could have cost as much or more than the paint and bodywork.

We decided to look for options that would save us some coin while giving us the look we were after. What we found were some great DIY kits from EZ Boy Interiors. Their online store allowed us to choose what color combination and stich pattern we liked, and they sewed them to factory specs for our car. Along with seat upholstery, EZ Boy offers carpet, headliners, and extra upholstery material for all of the other surfaces.

Follow along as we give our Olds’ interior a makeover with a pre-sewn upholstery kit.
